Steve Swenson and Tom Marzec began their professional partnership in 2010 at St. John – Mittelhauser & Associates, Inc., where they built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality environmental consulting services. Their work focused on
environmental permitting, due diligence, subsurface investigations, remediation, and site closure – helping clients navigate complex regulatory landscapes with confidence.

In 2019, the firm merged with Terracon Consultants, where both Steve and Tom continued to expand their expertise and client relationships. In 2024, driven by a shared vision for a more agile, client-focused approach, they returned to their entrepreneurial roots and founded Swenson – Marzec & Associates, Inc. (SMA).

Since its founding, SMA has experienced steady, strategic growth, attracting top-tier industry talent including Dan Lombardi, P.G.; Bridget Lombardi; Michelle Wagner, P.G.; and Gary Perkowtiz, P.G.  In 2026, the firm further strengthened its leadership team with the addition of Ron St. John, PHg, CPG; Jim Depa as Principal Geologist; and Perre Burns, PhD, P.E., as Principal Engineer.

Today, SMA is a team of more than 24 geologists, engineers, environmental scientists, and support professionals serving clients across the throughout the United States, with offices in Hartford, Chicago (Plainfield), and Rockford, Illinois; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas. The firm delivers responsive, high-quality solutions tailored to client needs.
