Steve Swenson and Tom Marzec began working together at St. John – Mittelhauser & Associates, Inc. in 2010 with a focus on environmental permitting, due diligence, investigation of subsurface impacts, remediation, and site closure. In 2019, St. John – Mittelhauser & Associates, Inc. merged with Terracon Consultants. Both Steve and Tom stayed with Terracon until 2024 when they decided to take a direct approach to their careers and client management by returning to their small company roots and founding Swenson – Marzec & Associates, Inc.

Currently, SMA employees approximately 10 people, serving the Midwest through offices in Rockford and Plainfield, Illinois and Muncie, Indiana. Almost all revenue is generated from environmental consulting, due diligence, investigation, and remediation.
